Beginner’s Guide to Electric Flight

Part 1

By Andrew Gibbs

Introduction
For modelers considering a move into electric power models, the subject of electric power can seem to be like a mysterious black art, with the number of possibilities so enormous that it seems almost impossible to know where to start. You may already have discovered that a familiarity with internal combustion (i.c.) models, whether diesel, glow, or petrol (gas) powered is of little help when investigating electric power, adding to the sense of confusion.

On Sunday we had another go, I brought my Pegase 1/4 scale.
I was very carious with the tow hook and fitted it well forward, I moved it back a little and got a higher launch, but it had developed a wing twist and was hard to fly

Malcolm  had some good flights with his Hercules

Selsley, 8 to 10MPH with very strong thermal lift

Saturday

Sunday

Awesome, AWESOME day on the slopes yesterday with Sparky Ben at Malvern. Whilst the lift really didn't feel too strong when stood on the face, in fact it was laced with thermal activity producing HUGE amounts of consistent lift. I got my Salto up to dizzying heights but the Sparkster specked out his 4m HP18! At times, the lift was so substantial it was a tad nerve wracking as you had to put in a lot of down elevator just to maintain height. Simply put, it was one of the best day's of list I have ever experienced (anywhere and yes, that does include the spot down West). Only downside to the day was my pride getting the better of me, refusing a chuck and stalling my Victor on launch resulting in the nose and tail breaking off. I have however been awarded a consolation prize, previously awarded to Yoyo, of 'Champion Chuck Muppet'. A day that will be remembered for some time to come but one answer escapes me - where was everyone else? We had the slope to ourselves all afternoon!
Here's Sparkster attempting to land in the lift and making a damn good job of it all things considered.
