The MSA Open

"With the cancellation of our thermal club comp the next day 4 of us decided to take up the challenge of flying in an F3J league event for the first time.

Following a late call to Mike Raybone ( cd on the day) on Friday evening to agree our participation, we gathered on Fish Meadow early on Saturday morning.

We were joined by 9 other seasoned F3J pilots and duly went about setting up our winch lines in readiness for a 10:00 briefing.

The competition consisted of 6 rounds with 4 slots per round. Once the comp stated the timing ran automatically with 10 minute slots followed by 4 minute preparation time. If you were not ready for the start you in effect forfeited potential flying time. This meant that for all 24 slots our team had to be ready to fly , time and spot for each other. Whilst
this may seem a lot of work it was thoroughly enjoyable.

The air was pretty unpredictable all day, with some slots being flown out while others required relaunches to achieve a relatively decent time.

The flying was arranged such that no member of any team flew against  each other.

Having stated flying around 10:15 the last round finished around 17:00.

The results of the comp have been published elsewhere and I have not included them in this report, other that to say that Phil Hayward reached the Fly off, finishing 3rd after the rounds and then 3rd in the
fly off.

A thoroughly enjoyable day, with good fun, and good company.
Many thanks to the organisers for letting us in as late entries and for making us feel welcome.

Mike has collected the times for the four members that don't usually do the Barcs comps

Following on from the results below I thought you might like to see the  individual flight times.

Phil    9:38 + 99 : 5:19 + 98 : 5:29 + 96 : 9:38 +98 : 9:49 + 98 : 9:46 + 35

Malcolm  5:14 + 93 : 9:41 + 90 : 9:51 + 65 : 6:34 + 50 : 8:51 + 0 : 9:34 + 65

Geoff   5:54 + 80 : 5:20 + 90 : 5:42 + 80 : 9:49 + 0 : 9:49 + 65 : 5:10 + 75

Mike  8:52 + 80 : 9:36 + 100 : 3.09 + 85 : 9:45 + 96 : 7:41 + 99 : 4:47 + 99

Phil used his Supra, Malcolm his Bubble Dancer, Geoff his Eliminator 134 variant and I used my Pike Perfect.

Regards

Mike

Thursday

When the lift was good it was very good this afternoon at Frocester. When it was bad it was definitely not very good.

Occasionally the wind would get very cold and the lift seemed to get turned off. With a bit of luck managed to stay up sometimes, other times just made it back to the slope for a hurried arrival.

Guy was there too, and a wildthing with some one flying it, sorry didn't get your name.

Still a pleasant afternoon, beats working anyway.

Friday

Selsley was superb this afternoon until the hailstorm spoiled the lift after a 10 minute storm. Nice thing about hail is that you can brush it off your clothes before it makes you wet...

It takes a while for the wind to sort itself back out after the storm but it seemed to do so as I left for the afternoon - having wafted N then W and finally back to god old NW!

I counted 14 glider guiders - all chuffed to get back on the tump....Poor old Big Bear!

Sunday

Had a good fly at Frocester. The winds were strong and almost on the point resulting in lift all over the LZ. I "grew a pair" and chucked off my U2 and was able to pull basic aeros as the lift was so good. Also flying was Scot, the gent Sparky Ben and I met last weekend. Unfortunately, his Wildthing get caught up in one of the trees just beside the road. I don't know if he rescued it but it was so high up the tree I think it may still be up there.
Looking forward to the next sesh.
