Hawling Open esoaring

We enjoyed the weather that was ordered for the day.
Sunny, warm with very light breezes however some competitors did encounter thick fog on their way to the venue. (which must have concerned those with little faith)

We welcomed three new participants to the eSoaring league, namely Chris Bishop, Phil Hayward and James Morrison. Although new to the BMFA eSoaring comps. they are all experienced and accomplished pilots.

Spencer scraped in just in time, having experienced a horrible journey down from Manchester - but was set up and ready to go in record time.

The first slot went off on time and Chris Bishop signalled his intent by posting the first 1000 on the scoreboard.

After four rounds lunch was taken. Mick Barnett, Andy Clark and Graham Beggin were called up for altimeter checks as is normal for the leaders at this stage. Followed closely by Phil Hayward and Chris Bishop in fourth and fifth places respectively.

Despite the ideal conditions, albeit with only subtle patches of lift at times. I was relieved that it was not becoming a landing competition with flight times in the slots, generally between six and ten minutes.
Therefore the decision on whether to drop the launch height for the afternoon was not a consideration!

A closely fought competition continued in good spirit for the rest of the the afternoon under a cloudless sky.

The very last slot was notably won by James Morrison, after overcoming some 'mechanical' problems in earlier flights that were causing him reduced launch heights. It was pleasing to see him post the last 1000 of the day.

I will not list the winners of the classes as Martin has already posted the results above for your perusal.
However congratulations to Mick Barnett for taking the Open and Gordon Brown, the 2M.

In closing I would like to thank everyone for their support by attending this event. Also and particularly, John Davis our host at Hawling, Martin Bell for doing all the technical things with the matrix and results. (things that are beyond my intellect!!) Marlene and Teresa for recording the flights.
AND finally my cousin Ian who once again gave up his day to come along and assist - mainly manning the microphone to announce proceedings and calling out the slots. (I'm sure this made things easier for everyone and certainly prevented any 'wrong slotting' or misflights)

Regards to all

Cliff

3 flight aggregate comp 9/09/12

The competition started with no wind but as the morning progressed the wind increased in speed. By the end of the comp wind speed was in the order of 12mph.

Between 10.30am and 12.30pm all the competitors had to do was fly as may times as they liked and record their highest 3 flights. Each flight not to exceed 30mins. Surprisingly nobody succeeded in flying the 30mins.

The longest flight of the morning was 17mins 56secs and the shortest was 6mins 24secs. Lift was very sparse and all the competitors had to work hard for their scores.

The results were as follows:

Position Name Points
1st John Freeman 100
2nd Steve Hannon  90
3rd Phil Hayward  80
4th Malcolm White  70
5th Mike Grantham  65
6th Brian Boucher  60
7th Mike Hurley  55

The flat field duration local record stands at 1 hour 9 minutes for this year by Sqeela with his Electric Shadow. on Minchinhampton common from 150 metre launch.
My AVA did a longer flight but was flown by 4 people

This is for hand launched, bungee or one short motor run on a flat field without the use of slope lift

Adam holds the HLG record at 14 minutes

The local height record for this year is held by Chris Bishop at 2953 feet attained at GMFC

Wednesday
I
flew at the Gloucester club and struggled with my Shadow.

best flight was only 10 minutes, this was achieved by sitting into wind where there was slight lift from some distortion like weak wave, I found lift once but did not follow it down wind.
I don't like flying in strong winds, but with the right attitude a slot can be flown out
