We have a new reporter this week, pen name Blaze Cunningham

How high is my model?
I am trying to estimate the height of a model using a digital camera, have a look at http://www.ebley.plus.com/distance1.xls
I got the basic idea from Father Ted

An HLG video will soon be released, this will be in slow motion

Slope/flat

Monday
Richard's Weasel was great fun and went well once we moved to the north facing slope at Selsley

Monday 19th April – The South East wind onto Rodborough Common seemed to have brought a bag of sink-o-matic for the day. The light shifting wind was not ideal but significant thermal activity more than made up the difference. Phil’s reasonably light HLG and my Radina DLG both managed a few good pulls culminating with a catch on landing up by the car park – Awesome thermal flying!

Tuesday 20th April – A brisk Selsley Common and no coat….beginning to sound familiar! Winds picked up and flattened the slope lift to about 400ft. The XXL struggled to make the tight turns required of the narrow thermals but did manage to get away a few times. Getting used to the recent warmer conditions makes days like this seem like we were back in winter!

Wednesday

Blissful sunshine on Selsley Common and a much gentler wind than the previous day! The only downside being that it was Northerly at lunchtime and continued East through the afternoon. What XC Weather did not mention was the monster thermals! First launch of the Dragon clocked a not insignificant ascent of 1,540ft above the launch point – a very tiny spec! (logged on the vario). At full crow she refused to come down eventually descending way back at about 150fpm.(the vario reads out altitude change in ft). Conditions then turned scratchy and it seemed the fun was over. Phil’s Pegase flew like a dream (well balanced and little wing loading to speak of) spiralling up in the thermals and even enjoyed the Selsley East slope along with the Dragon later in the day. Days of epic thermals like this are rare!

Thursday
A relatively calm Minchinhampton common set the scene for a dabble in the realms of reduced voltage. My complete neglect in preparation for today’s adventures bit quite hard as my Radina DLG dived  in vertically at circa 50 mph. It will fly again but an accurate description of the fuz would be ‘multiple fractures’. I just hope the radio gear is intact!

Ray and Steve flew Electric models, Steve's FunJet was very fast

Friday

Slope lift was not good at Haresfield
7 or 8 Essex lads have arrived for their yearly visit. Sadly lift at Haresfield was poor this afternoon in a gentle breeze on Haresfield but apparently this morning was good.

Despite the breeze, Minchinhampton became a thermal delight through midday with a few sailplane pilots getting away nicely. Phil’s DLG caught an express elevator and as he followed it back across the common achieved a height in the region of 750ft. At 1.5 meters it was beginning to look quite small!

Let’s keep our fingers crossed these sunny days continue!

Blaze Cunningham.
