Another weather station is on line, this one at Bisley have a look http://www.gdobsy.co.uk/weatherStation/Current_Vantage_Pro.htm

VIDEO
Picture the scene. The MPX Fox glider had been converted to use a small rocket motor for motive power. Thinking back to last summer when we first attempted it, the design and calculations couldn't possibly be wrong this time? Could they? Using a Rocket motor to boost the RC converted MPX Fox couldn't possibly go wrong a second time round.....

A test questions http://www.bmfamid.co.uk/onlinetest.html

From Andy Westgate
Finished my loft conversion and am now building my first scale glider in a long time. Remember my little Cicogna vintage (bottom left) flying wing, well I’m now doing 1/3 scale one at 4.5mtrs span…electric powered

A poor man's F5B
F5B gliders got to be called Hotliner due to the amount of power fed to the electric motor, this was around 3000 watts, an awesome amount of power for a two metre glider  weighing around 2,000 grams. Power is now electronically limited to 1750 watts for competitions
They were  required to do two tasks, the first a distance event where the pilot tries to get as many laps between two sighting devices set 150 meters apart during a 200 second window. The motor  can only be run when the plane is off the course.  and can fly at over 175mph in the distance task The second task is a 10 minute duration flight. In this  the pilot works to keep the plane in the air for ten minutes using as little motor as possible. At the end of the ten minutes there is a spot landing. The current F5B planes can fly the ten minute duration with five seconds of motor run.
Most models sold as hotliners are not very hot and more like over powered Self launching gliders, they would be unlikely to glide at over a 100MPH or complete a 10 minute thermal task.

My recently acquired Aquila is such a model, only Luke warm at just 500watts, I was given this model by someone who likes to take life at a gentler pace

This was fitted with a direct drive  speed 600,  this has come out and replaced with a Turnigy  HXT 35-42A brushless, a cheap version of the AXI 2820 with poor bearings and weak magnets 8% down on power as well, but at only $24 a bargain, I  paid £10 second hand, This draws 44amps from a 2200ma Zippy 3s turning a 11 X 6 folding prop

Input Voltage : 7.4V~14.8V (2~4S Li-po)
Kv : 1450 rpm/V within 10%
Current capacity : 45A/30s
Dimensions : 35mm X 42mm / 1.38in X 1.65in
Shaft diameter : 4mm / 0.16in
Weight : 132g
Number of poles/magnets : 14
Recommended model weight : 1000~2300g / 35~81oz
Power equivalent : .30 to .35 IC  glow engine

Suggested prop size: 11x5

The model weighs 3lb 8oz all up, the motor will take it up very fast at an angle of about 70 degrees reaching thermalling height in about 6 seconds, for a vertical climb at this wattage I would need a slower motor and bigger prop
It thermals well able to  slow up a little and turn fairly tight, there are no flaps so landing is rather fast, I have programmed both ailerons to go up, this does not do a lot as the ailerons are very short.

Definitely not an F5B competition model but pleasant to fly and a climb  at about 60 MPH should be fast enough for the average club flyer

I recently changed the motor on my Multiplex Fox  to this 7 gram Micro Out runner model  X1304B x1.
The fox tip stalled  with the 12gram motor it is a little better with this motor
rated at 2100 KV, with a 2.5 amp maximum current turns 5 x 2 GWS direct drive prop. at cruise it draws 1 amp from a 250 ma 2 cell lipo
At full throttle it produces 2.3 oz of thrust at an input power of 16 watts, all up weight is 2.5 oz, performance is adequate and plenty for most people if flown indoors

Wednesday

Thursday
A strong breeze at Frocester, a little too strong for most of us. The wind went round to the north in the evening and there was some flying on Selsley

Friday
A bit of thermalling on Minch or rather lack of it me and Andy flew  three of my self launching gliders

Saturday
Some strong lift at Minch and lots of sink, in one period me John struggled to find lift with our Highlights

Sunday
This started out well with gentle slope lift and plenty of small thermals, as the thermal got stronger the slope lift disappeared and patches of sink caused a few problems
Bryan thermalled his ASK18, Mike Alula was great fun, Mick managed to miss all the thermals with his Highlight.

Chedworth aerotow

A mixed day, Steve Holland was unable to attend and Mario's tug crashed while trying to tow up Doug's glider. I had a fly with Len's scale Motor  glider, this thermalled with the engine ticking over. perfect weather with good thermals. lots of gliders flown and a jet.
