New Dynamic Soaring world record - 392mph!

Spencer Lisenby broke his existing Dynamic Soaring world record
recently when his 100" span Kinetic model was recorded at
392mph flying in 40mph winds at Weldon Hill, Lake Isabella,
California.
Congratulations go to Spencer and his team of helpers for this
amazing achievement.
Next meeting 18th March, Club Meeting: 15th April,
8.00pm in The Bear.
There has been some support for a Limbo comp in April, this is always
fun to try and watch.
Please think of it as the club members flying together, help will be
needed with barracking judging and scoring. If you can't come bring a note
signed by your parents and 3 grandparents

Visit to Hendon RAF Museum.
On Sunday 22nd March we gathered at Aston Down airfield for an 8:00am
start - the coach driver chickened out trying to limbo his coach under
the 6ft 6in barrier on the entrance to the airfield so we were delayed
by a few minutes whilst a locksmith was organised to let the coach in.
We mounted the coach, so to speak, and picked up some others enthusiasts
from Cirencester and then we totalled 33 passengers. The coach took the
country route though Bibury, Burford, Oxford etc which offered us
views of a brown hare, (I enjoyed this very much), 2 deer and 3 or 4 red
kites
soaring overhead. We eventually arrived at the Hendon Museum at 11am,
exactly on queue as per agenda.
The museum comprised 3 large halls (hangers) with various interesting
planes and a workshop area which had some real vintage stuff on display
and a restaurant. There were some very exciting planes to see and
photograph. I was particularly impressed by the Sunderland seaplane. It
was enormous. The
fuselage, or is it a hull, was just awesome from the outside and we were
allowed to go inside and walk through the plane. The inside
seemed a lot smaller and was quite cramped, excellent presentation for
aeroplane heads.
There was an Avro Vulcan to walk around and underneath. This was
enormous, and the full supply of 21, 1000 pound bombs were ready to be
loaded in the bomb bay.
There were dozens of other planes all displayed with descriptions and
specifications which suited me just right.
I learned at least 1 thing at the museum and that was:- that in a
vintage, rotary, aero engine, the cylinders rotate around the crank
shaft and the propeller rotates in the other direction via an epicyclic
gearbox. Amazing!
I would like to thank the CRCS for organising this event and for
inviting the SCSA to join them on the visit.

At about 4:40 pm I went to Frocester to fly my Salto 1/6th scale
glider.
The wind was due West and I should really have gone to Selsley West. The
wind was about 15 mph and blowing straight up the Westerly facing
landing slope. It was only the 2nd time that I had flown this model and
it performed very well. It flew very fast; it looped, channelled and
stall turned very well. I had a lot of aileron and elevator movement (normal
for me) and when I rolled it it started to roll quickly and then
when inverted and I pushed in down elevator it flicked quick as a flash
and completed the roll twice as fast. This was an adrenaline rush and I
repeated it several times trying to control the flick.
I think that the only way to control the roll is to cut down the
elevator throw - or maybe put a couple of ounces of lead up front. I
think I'll leave it alone, I enjoyed the adrenaline rush! The landing
was very exciting - the wind was blowing straight up the landing slope
- it took 4 or 5 circuits with flaps and crow brakes
to get a controlled approach and a good landing. 25 minutes of flying
was enough
to get frozen fingers and toes, so I landed and went home.

WEDNESDAY
A strong breeze on Selsley gusting to 30MPH
Frocester Friday pm
15 mph + at Frocester with strong smooth lift.
Guy flew his Phase 6 and Miraj and both went well.
Visibility was not good in the strong sun light.
Graham flew his Phase 4 and Tim flew a repaired
large Blade after repairing it. It went well.
Andy flew his smaller Blade and it seemed to fly a
lot better since he removed some nose weight.
Highlight of the afternoon was the maiden flight of
Christine’s new Luna. It is a very fast plane as she ably
demonstrated. Also very aerobatic. Needs some lead out of the nose for
the next outing but it’s energy retention and ability to soar in the
lift were clear to see.
