Nerd bit

Power. If you lift a 2 kg weight 1 meter in 1 second, then the rate of energy conversion is 2 x 10 = 20 Joules per second, or 20 Watts of power.

My electric glider weighs 2 KG and climbs at 10 metres per second, that's 200 watts; the input is 400 watts so it's about 50% efficient

The motor is a mega 16/25/3 through a 4.4 Maxon gearbox to a 13 X 7 prop, 4s 1500 ma Lipo
Weight111 g
No load current Io 1.9
Size28x41,5 φ x L mm
No load 1700 RPM/V
Max. current 30 A
diameter28 mm
Diameter of shaft 3,2 mm
Max speed
55 000 revolution/min

This motor would take more current for a short period

My Self launching glider takes 22 seconds to reach the maximum 200 metre esoaring competition height

You can borrow one of my flight loggers if you want, you can install the RC electronics software to read the data, or I can do it and send you the graphs like the one above.
The device tries to estimate the height to switch off the motor so that the model reaches the height it is set to; above the motor switched off at 190 metres and the model climbed another 14 metres

Thanks everyone for turning out. Despite how it looked this morning, we managed to get 8 rounds in. Conditions this afternoon turned out to be quite nice in the end!

Esoaring

 - Sunday June 14th - East Worldham - Hampshire

After a dull start with some low cloud, the weather improved significantly by late morning, to provide some excellent soaring conditions.
Chris Foss once more came through in top position with Ken Manley and Dave East following close behind. Despite not winning any slots, Bernie Jones scored consistently well to take 4th place in Open.
Yet another great day at East Worldham!
Thanks to all competitors for making it so easy to run and special thanks to Marlene for collecting entry fees and scoring.
Also thanks to Phil H for the photos!
